We started class this week with an Art History lesson – Early Italian Renaissance, “Madonna of the Book”, Botticelli. Note the Art History category. After AH, I had the artists draw a still life. I discussed “space” as an Element of Art. I emphasized “negative space.” We also discussed “proportion.” I asked the girls not to talk while they drew so they could really concentrate. They did a great job drawing and not talking:) After drawing the objects, I instructed the girls to divide the negative space into sections. The artists then colored the sections in a variety of colors. This is a great activity to learn about positive and negative space. Before we knew it the class time was over. That hour flies by! Next week the artists will continue to work on their studio projects.
